My Brother found this Bayonet near our demolished bay house shorty after hurricane Carla delivered its 10-12 ft tidal surge in the Seabrook area. It’s possible the storm surge exposed it before my brother saw it and pried it loose.
The most similar Bayonet I have found in my internet searches is the French M1842 but has many differences.
This straight blade is 21-3/4” long and is double edged whereas the M1842 is neither straight nor double edged.
The brass crosspiece is 2-5/16” at its widest point and does not have a muzzle ring whereas the M1842 does.
The brass grip is 4-3/8”long. The overall length is 26-7/16”. Unfortunately there are no markings anywhere.
As you can see the blade is in terrible condition. I sent pics to the Curator at the San Jacinto Battlefield Museum and he thought it was Spanish. Collectors firearms said “looks French”.
I am hoping to learn the Country of origin as well as the period it was made and or in use. Thanks in advance
