It smells like panic
Faced with the release of some of the Epstein files, Trump is lashing out, red in tooth and claw, at his friends and enemies alike.
On Friday he ordered the Department of Justice to investigate Epstein’s ties to prominent Democrats — but not himself or any of his sex-trafficking cronies.
His pliant Attorney General, Pam Bondi, quickly acquiesced, “even though four months ago the Justice Department formally declared that nothing in the Epstein files warranted further investigation.”
That about-face, as much as any action Ms. Bondi has taken this year, demonstrated the near-complete breakdown of the Justice Department’s traditional independence to prosecute cases based on facts and the law, as opposed to presidential fiat. And, crucially, it could foreclose any further disclosures of the Epstein files.
On Saturday, Trump also lashed out at a former close ally — Marjorie Taylor Greene — in a lengthy rant in which he announced he was “withdrawing his support and Endorsement” from the former MAGA star who had broken with him over the release of the Epstein files.
