In 1965, George Harrison of the Beatles was dissatisfied with his guitar tone, built with a Gretsch guitar through a Vox amp, so he had Mal Evans, the Beatles' road manager, go out and purchase him and John Lennon Fender Stratocaster. Mal returned with two identical Sonic Blue Strats, and they were used extensively on Help! Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, first appearing on Ticket to Ride. In 1967, The Fab Four began painting their Instruments. Paul, his Rickenbacker 4001S, John, his Gibson J-160E (along with his Rolls-Royce) Ringo, a kick drum head, and George, his beloved Stratocaster. George lovingly painted what would be later known as "Rocky" with florescent Dayglo paint, and it first appeared in the Magical Mystery Tour film, during the I am the Walrus portion of the film. The design evolved over the last few years of the Beatles, to what it is today, and was used by George in the studio and on a select few live performances.
This guitar was painted to look extremely close to how Rocky would have looked in the studio. Unlike the MIM Rocky Strats, this guitar is equipped with a torn up Grimwoods Music Store decal. I believe that at some point, George attempted to remove the sticker, but to no avail, and just left it on, and there is a picture of George playing his strat in the studio, and the sticker looks distressed.
