I decided to let go of my exceptionally clean 1979 Burgundyglo Rickenbacker 330/12. It’s been an outstanding instrument that’s seen plenty of recording sessions over the years. Still, since I’m no longer spending as much time in the studio, I’d prefer it go to someone who’s been hunting for a 12-string Rickenbacker from this period.
Instruments like this from the late 1970s are not easy to find, particularly in Burgundyglo and in such excellent shape. That makes this a truly uncommon find for both enthusiasts and serious players. Among finishes, Azureglo and Burgundyglo tend to be the most desirable, offering a distinctive look compared to the more frequently seen Jetglo, Fireglo, and Mapleglo. The rich, wine-toned Burgundyglo finish has aged beautifully, with attractive grain patterns still visible beneath the surface.
As for sound, it delivers exactly what you’ve been dreaming of! The Hi-Gain pickups (often nicknamed button-tops) are a personal favorite and produce that iconic tonal character. Fans of The Smiths, R.E.M, The Smithereens, The Jam, Lush, and The Plimsouls, etc will recognize the same model of pickups from that era, making it easy to dial in that signature sparkle, depth, and slightly gritty edge that defines classic Rickenbacker 12-string tones. It really shines in recording environments where definition and personality are key.
I consulted with a couple of knowledgeable members from my online Rickenbacker pages, and they pointed out that production numbers for 330/12s in the 1970s were very limited. Guitars like this don’t surface very often, but one comparable example only recently showed up at Olivia’s after many years, and it’s listed for several hundred more. Includes the OG case.
If you’re after a vintage Rickenbacker with strong visual appeal and solid collector interest, this one checks all the boxes. Feel free to reach out if you’d like more pictures, video clips, or further information. I'm looking for a local sale in Houston or Austin, and I'm not interested in any trades at the moment.
