The TAMUK rabbit was developed by Texas A&M University of Kingsville (thus the name). Their goal was to develop a rabbit that could better handle the brutal Texas summer heat.
They are considered a composite breed as they are a cross of multiple different breeds including New Zealand Red, Siamese Satin,Californian, New Zealand White, Dutch, Champagne d'Argent, Harlequin, and Havana. Because of the variety of breeds, TAMUKS come in various colors.
TAMUKs have long ears and thin fur coats which allows them to tolerate the hot and humid Texas summers better. They are a hardy meat breed with a high production, strong feed conversion, and heat tolerance! They also have a calmer temperament which makes them easier to handle.
