Information about uranium glass.
Natural Uranium was first used to color glass green in the 18th century and it continued to be used for this purpose until the beginning of World War II. In 1959, glass makers resumed using depleted Uranium to color the glass. By the 1980's, a few U.S. companies made limited pieces The greatest period of popularity being from the 1880's through the 1920's.
Included in the cabinet are Jadeite Mixing Bowls made with traces of uranium.
Photos were taken with a combination of a black light that shows the glass glowing, some with camera flash and regular fluorescent lighting. These are normally best photographed separately to show all the detail of individual pieces which I didn't want to take out of the cabinet to do.
All of these interesting pieces can be seen in our shop...
