Ganesh, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka and Pillaiyar, is an extremely popular Hindu and Buddhist deity.

In Hinduism, Ganesh is the god of beginnings and the remover of obstacles. He is worshiped before any major endeavor to clear the way and guarantee success. He is also the patron god of letters and learning. In Thailand as well, he is called Phra Phikanet and is worshiped for fortune, success, and the removal of all obstacles.

In Buddhism, Ganesh is depicted in a variety of ways. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is called Ganapati as well and is considered an emanation of Avalokiteshvara. In Japan, he is known as Shoten or Kangiten and is worshiped mainly in the Shingon and Tendai schools. He is considered a manifestation of the Buddha Vairocana and is said to be able to grant all wishes, even impossible ones.
