We're moving to Houston in mid-August for one year and, at the same time, are seeking to lease out our beautiful loft in Washington, D.C. Though perhaps unlikely, it is not impossible that some Houstonian is in the opposite circumstance: seeking to spend a year in Washington and to lease out a home in Houston. If so, read on.

Our loft is a spacious classroom in a 110-year-old schoolhouse, with a total of seven units. The entire place was restored just a few years ago, and it is stunning.

The space itself has 25-ft.-high ceilings, blackboards, original wood floors, and high-modern furnishings, and an enormous bathroom with a clawfoot tub and open-air shower. The kitchen has all-new stainless steel appliances and marble countertops and is on a riser about 5 feet above the rest of the classroom. Ideally, we would like to leave the place furnished; our tastes run towards the modern.

The building has a gorgeous black-bottom outdoor pool with ample poolside seating, a hot tub, a grill and outdoor bar, and an outdoor fireplace. There is also a private gym in the basement. With only so few units in the building--and about 10 residents altogether--neither the pool nor the gym are ever crowded. No less important, everyone's friendly, and we have cocktails by the pool from time to time. The large common areas frequently host art exhibits, with opening parties every month or two.

The building is located at the edge of Capitol Hill right by the resurgent Atlas District, where there are a variety of restaurants and bars, including one, recently opened, with an indoor miniature golf course. There is plenty of free on-street parking, and stations for the orange/blue line (Potomac Ave) and red line (Union Station) are a 15-minute walk, or 5-minute bike ride, away. There's also bus service, with a stop for several lines just a block away.

Finally, the building allows for two cats or one small to medium dog--up to 40 lbs or so, I believe.
