Radiant barriers are materials that are installed in buildings to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss, and hence to reduce home heating and cooling energy usage.


HOW DOES RADIANT BARRIER WORK?

On a sunny day in Texas, solar energy is absorbed by the roof, heating the roof sheathing and causing the underside of the sheathing and the roof framing to radiate heat downward toward the attic floor. When a radiant barrier is placed inside the attic, much of the heat radiated from the hot roof is reflected back toward the outside. This makes the top surface of pre-existing insulation cooler than it would have been without a radiant barrier and thus reduces the amount of heat that moves through the insulation into the rooms below the ceiling.

Is it physically possible to prevent water from entering an older wood-frame home that's built on a slab? For instance, has anyone tried applying a waterproof coating or cladding that is sealed all the way around the house to the expected maximum flood level, in my case about 3 ft?

By googling "flood protection barriers", I found commercial products designed to seal doorways during a flood, as long as the rest of the building's perimeter is protected. I am envisioning a sealed, waterproof exterior to a height of 3 ft above ground level, with commercially available flood barriers to be placed at the front and back door when there's a threat of flooding.

Maybe the waterproofing could be tar, like the stuff used for sealing flat roofs, or perhaps multiple coats of a commercially available rubber-like compound in liquid form, that dries as a waterproof surface. (I have seen similar stuff in hardware stores, but not intended used for this purpose.)

I have no idea if any of these ideas are even potentially practical, or if protecting a wood-frame house against water incursion is a just a pipedream.

I would like to know what flood-prone homeowners have tried in the past. Has ANYTHING worked? I also want to hear what has NOT worked. (I am not talking about an overwhelming flood, say, up to roof height or even window height -- only flooding to about the 3 ft. level.)

Also, are there practical reasons you would NOT want to waterproof the lower 3 ft of your house, down to the slab? (Because of normal moisture retention, whatever.)

i am a grandmom that has 2 wonderful grandchildren, their mother died a few years ago. I am a nurse but I became disabled a few months ago and I'm not able to work.

I don't know how to get my grandkids anything for christmas. Katie, she's 12 and Patrick is 14. They are very good children and would be happy with anything I give them.
